Really?

The more that I see articles like this and all the new movies being made during the last two years about the end of the world, aliens, and various apocalypse scenarios, the more I think that maybe the media is trying to prepare us for something coming. And I don't think that it's just because of the approaching "doomsday" year of 2012. Has anyone out there ever heard of project Blue Beam? In the last couple of months, more and more people have been sharing their frustration with me about things like the government bailouts, health care, and financial failure, and it's almost as if they are starting to realize how complex and interwoven all of these issues are. I think that many people are now awakening out of a deep sleep to the sudden realization that many of the growing problems in our government today are partly due to our utter lack of involvement, interest, or even education among the common citizens about the issues.
So the question always comes in, "What can I do?" I hear this more than any other question. As part of the answer, it would be suitable to pull from the famous angry speech in the movie "The Network" (1976):
"So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!'"

I think it's true; that is the emotion that we are going to have to pull from to change ourselves. This way of life our society has set up for us has so many distractions and so many temptations. We all know that our food is junk, that we don't care maybe as much as we should about the political climate around the world, and that we shouldn't be so concerned about the newest gadget, video game, or who won American Idol this season. But we all need to start getting angry and getting involved. Zack De La Rocha says, in the song "Freedom" by Rage Against the Machine , "Anger is a gift." Maybe that is what he meant: it can be used as a motivational tool. You can make a change just by reading a book or a website, watching a movie, by protesting, or talking with your friends about things going on around the world that really matter like hunger, aids, the water crisis, human trafficking, child labor, and the list goes on.
I guess in the end, I see this resistance to what's coming as a way of love protecting itself; when love and compassion is extended from one human being to another. There is no telling what will happen. I've had so many friends share with me newspaper articles, websites, books, movies, and music that have changed my life forever. I think it's important to remember just how big our voices can be. No matter what your profession is, you have a unique gift that you can use for change.
